Casita Azul was born from a simple yet powerful vision
To create a home away from home where children could learn, grow, and thrive in a loving, culturally rich environment.
To create a home away from home where children could learn, grow, and thrive in a loving, culturally rich environment.
Our journey began with Laura Paz Whitmore, a determined Honduran immigrant with a passion for making a difference. She moved to the United States to pursue her dream of earning a Psychology degree and spent over 12 years dedicating herself to social services at the Multnomah County Health Department.
In 2016, Laura and her husband, Derek, welcomed their daughter, Elena, into their lives. From that moment, they were committed to raising her surrounded by the vibrant traditions and deep cultural roots that shaped Laura’s own upbringing—a celebration of family, heritage, and hope for the future.
Our story continued with Gertrudis Muñoz, lovingly called "Abuela," who left Honduras to join her daughter Laura and help care for little Elena. Her presence brought warmth and tradition to their growing family.
As Abuela sang cherished lullabies, prepared comforting meals, and communicated solely in Spanish, Derek and Laura saw the magic of intergenerational connection come to life. Together, they embraced the beauty of bilingualism and the wisdom of generations, living the truth of the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." Abuela's love and heritage became a cornerstone of their family's journey.
However, when it was time for Elena to start preschool, they struggled to find a Spanish immersion program that felt warm, inviting, and deeply connected to culture. The schools they visited felt sterile and impersonal, lacking the sense of family, love, and belonging they wanted for their daughter.
